Had a chance to get out and fish a local flow that has many species moving upriver currently. We have caught whitebass, walleye, and spotted bass recently. But today, only the bigger smallies wanted to play! We tried a few different baits, with the only success coming off 412 Baits: 3.5” grubs and Free Minnow 4.5in. watermelon/silver rigged Neko style. Neko rigged baits are a super finesse technique for finicky fish and work well in the spring. Especially around the dreaded cold fronts the normally set the bite back a week or so. The fish were holding in small deeper pockets and eddies near runs or shallow rocky areas in the river. When the lure was presented correctly the bass committed to the bait with reckless abandon, to my enjoyment!
