Had my parents up this past weekend to enjoy spring in the mountains. They wanted to do a short hike, so I suggested heading up into the Smokies to check out the Cataloochee Valley. Plus, I figured I might be able to bring the fly rod along and show everyone a wild trout. We hiked about a mile and half back off the road on one of the major trials in that Valley. I immediately started to spot fish in the creek moving around and some were rising to small tan colored bugs. So I matched the hatch and proceeded to catch a few beautiful wild Rainbow trout. I only took about thirty casts but had a great time watching some really cool fish come up and wail on my fly. I missed two and caught two. We had the privilege to see some great wildlife along the way including numerous turkeys, an elk herd, neo-tropical songbirds, and impressive native wildflowers. With a picnic lunch to top it off, it was one of my favorite days so far this Spring.
